Hypnotism & Mesmerism
Over the centuries, the ability to place a person into a trace and then make them perform all sorts of unusual feats has been noted. In the 1700's, Franz Anton Mesmer called it 'animal magnetism'; today we call it either 'mesmerism' (after Franz) or 'hypnotism' (after the Greek word for 'sleep'). And yet, after all this time, we have no better idea of what it is and how it works than we did when it was first noticed. Go figure.
